Navy Veteran and MM Student Angelica Rojas Participates in Ted Baker Study Tour

Merchandising & Marketing student and U.S. Navy veteran Angelica Rojas recently visited Ted Baker’s Los Angeles office as part of a special study tour to get an inside look at what it takes to run a successful business in the fashion industry. Patrick Heitkam, Ted Baker EVP of Wholesale and Licensing, gave a special presentation to the students about their brand’s quirky sense of humor, their attention to detail, and the company culture. We caught up with Angelica to find out more.

What did you think of the Ted Baker visit? I absolutely loved our experience at Ted Baker. From the magic-filled ice breaker to the hands-on seeing and feeling product, it was truly an amazing in-depth experience. We really dove into the brand identity and strategy as well as the product development and merchandising. Overall, I’d say we learned about the very important aspects of being a successful brand in today’s industry.

Why do you think it's important to meet and network with professionals in the industry, as a student like you did on this study tour? The amazing thing about meeting new people is that you never know what that relationship could lead to or hold for you. Therefore, it is important to put yourself out there and take advantage of the opportunity make new professional connections because truly, the more people you know, the more connected you are and the more potential opportunity there is.

Tell us a little about yourself: I’m a passionate lover of fashion, art, and travel. I grew up in Texas, Dallas, and have always craved adventure and style. I joined the Navy in 2013 and served for four years, providing me with opportunity and discipline as well as personal growth. I have always lived my life with the thought that I could do or be anything and I encourage everyone to live as if they are limitless.

What are your career goals and how is FIDM helping you get there? FIDM is an amazing hub for encouragement and resources. I have found so much assistance from my instructors and career advisors from checking my resume and giving me assistance with that to applying for internships and part-time jobs. My goal is to eventually work for myself as an entrepreneur. In the immediate future, however, I’d love to just learn, and pursue any and every job I have the opportunity to, and hopefully style a bit along the way.

Anything else you’d like to share? I have always lived by the concept that hard work will take you far, but your unique qualities and skills will keep you going, so never forget to continue working on yourself.
